In the final scene of my favourite movie, the main character, Sally Owens says:
“Always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder.
Keep rosemary by your garden gate,
Plant lavender for luck,
And fall in love whenever you can”
The quote got me thinking:
“Always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder”
Salt being considered precious, associated with purity and protection, spilling it would equal bad luck. Throwing it over your left shoulder symbolically binds or wards off negative forces. It acknowledges mistakes and allows you to move forward without fear.
“Plant Lavender for luck”
In addition to luck everyone is familiar with the peaceful calm that the scent of lavender can invoke. Associated with love and peace, Lavender is also considered to be a herb of protection. Placed under pillows to aid in a more restful sleep, and around the home to keep away “unwanted energy and influences”. Creating an environment where good things can grow.
This left me with one question: Why keep Rosemary by the garden gate?
To the world wide web for answers!!
Rosemary is a stand out in any herb garden. Instantly recognizable with a sharp clean scent that can really jump out. It’s more than just a plant you cook with, though it does that perfectly.
Tucked in a little pot in your kitchen or in a windowsill anywhere in your home, it manages to be both practical and, in a way, a little symbolic. Rosemary is very useful in the kitchen, it is a staple herb. A small sprig can transform roasted potatoes, vegetables, and meats. With its rich earthy flavour it is one of those herbs that can make a meal complete. Beyond cooking Rosemary has long been used in teas, infused oils, and even in simple home remedies for digestion, sore muscles and can help to promote healthy hair growth.
Outside of practical uses it can also play a role in the atmosphere of your home. Its natural oils have antimicrobial properties, and the strong scent can help deter insects like mosquitoes. Set near doors and windows it can provide a subtle, living barrier. It's a pleasant scent for us, less so for anything you would rather keep outside.
For centuries rosemary has been associated with memory and clarity. In ancient cultures rosemary was worn by students while studying. It was believed that it helped sharpen the mind. Even now many people find the scent is linked to alertness and mental focus. It is a plant that feels at home outside of the kitchen, on a desk in a workspace, or anywhere you need to be clear headed.
Historically Rosemary has been used in both weddings and funerals as a symbol of love, loyalty, and remembrance. Representing the idea of holding on to what matters. A promise, a person, or a memory. It carries these dual meanings so naturally.
It was no surprise when I found that there is a long standing tradition of placing Rosemary near the entrance. Practically, it freshens the air and helps deter pests. Symbolically, used as a form of protection, helping to define a space as safe and calm. Whether or not you believe in that side of things, there is no denying that a home with living plants simply feels better.
……… and maybe that is the whole point.
Be mindful of what you allow into your garden.
With this knowledge I feel the second part of the quote hits home a little more.
“Keep Rosemary by your garden gate
Plant Lavender for luck
And fall in love when ever you can”
Protection ~ Peace ~ Love
Rosemary doesn't demand much. Give it light, don’t over water it and it will thrive. In return it offers flavour, fragrance, and good vibes. It’s a lesson that a simple herb can carry a surprising amount of versatility.
It’s practically Magic!!
